Union, N.J. (3/1/24) – The Kean University baseball team suffered a 7-3 defeat to #24 Arcadia University on Friday evening in non-conference action.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
The Cougars (7-3) jumped on the board with two runs in the first inning. Christian Pellone got things started with an RBI double and Phil Marcantonio traded places with him two batters later for a 2-0 lead.
The Knights (4-1) then took the lead for good with three runs in the third. With runners on first and second, a confusing and controversial play was called with Matt Donchez at the plate. Donchez hit a ball back up the middle that was snared by the pitcher who threw to third. The ball was high pulling Caleb Rodriguez off the bag, but all the players then stopped thinking time was called. The runner at third in Gabe Diaz kept walking toward home plate while the home plate umpire walked toward the field umpire for a conference. The umpire called catcher's interference and asked Arcadia if they wanted the "play" to stand or take the catcher's interference. Arcadia elected to keep the play and the runner was awarded home for the Knight's first run. With the Cougars rattled, Anthony Bruno followed with an RBI single and Tommy Ajjan lofted a sac fly for a 3-2 lead.
Arcadia added two more in the sixth as Justin Massielo lofted a solo homerun and Diaz collected an RBI single.
Kean got one back in the sixth as the Cougars loaded the bases on two singles and a walk. Pinch-hitter CJ Tomalavage lofted a sac fly to push across one.
The Knights added insurance in the ninth with an RBI single from Donchez and an RBI double from Bruno.
