Union, N.J. (4/14/24) – The Kean University baseball team finished off the season sweep of #12/8 Montclair State University with a 5-2 win on Sunday afternoon.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Kean (19-11, 6-4 NJAC) jumped out in front in the first inning as Tyler Stone doubled home Justin Teixeira who reached on a single.
Montclair State University (24-7, 6-4 NJAC) answered right back in the top of the second to even things up. Marcus Johnson led off the inning with a full count walk and after moving to second on a groundout, came home to score as Joey Nolan singled in the gap.
Kean took the lead back for good in the same frame as rookie Dominic Masino homered to left with two outs and a runner aboard for the 3-1 advantage.
The Red Hawks cut into the lead in the top of the fifth as Johnson lofted a sac fly, scoring Sam Angelo who reached on a leadoff full count walk.
The Cougars added insurance in the bottom of the seventh as Dan Reistle reached second via a throwing miscue with one out. He came all the way around to score as Caleb Rodriguez reached via a throwing error on a strikeout, ball in the dirt.
Kean added one more in the bottom of the eighth Gianni Marano recorded a sacrifice with the bases loaded.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
Southpaw Jason Gilman (3-3) tossed a complete game, the first of his career, and allowed seven hits, only one extra base hit, and four walks while striking out 12.
Offensively Christian Pellone and Teixeira each had two hits.
For the Red Hawks, Reece Malek had two hits.
