Union, N.J. (4/20/24) – The Kean University baseball team extended their win streak to 10 games with a sweep of host The College of New Jersey on Saturday afternoon in NJAC action.
Game One – Kean 10, TCNJ 8 (10 innings)
HOW IT HAPPENED:
The Cougars (24-11, 10-4 NJAC) won the power struggle as both teams combined for 31 hits in the opener.
Kean pushed out to a 7-0 lead after the first two innings. The Cougars got RBI singles from Justin Teixeira (twice), and Gianni Marano while Phil Marcantonio collected a two RBI single.
The Lions (18-13, 6-8 NJAC) scratched across two in the bottom of the third and pulled within one with a four spot in the bottom of the sixth.
The game was all tied up as TCNJ added one more in the seventh.
Marcantonio put Kean back in the lead in the top of the ninth with a solo blast, but the Lions answered in the bottom of the ninth to send the game into extras.
IN the decisive final inning, Dan Reistle was hit to start the inning. Teixeira doubled to push across the go ahead run. Gianni Marano added insurance with a sac fly.
Noah Rivera closed the door in the bottom of the ninth with a 1-2-3 inning.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
Teixeira was 4-for-6 with three RBI and three runs scored while Marcantonio was 4-for-5 with four RBI.
Rivera earned the win with four relief innings of work. He allowed four hits and two runs with two walks and one strikeout.
Game Two – Kean 6, TCNJ 3
HOW IT HAPPENED:
In a tight pitchers' duel, TCNJ scored first with two runs in the bottom of the fourth.
Kean took the lead in the sixth, a lead they would not relinquish, with five runs. Marcantonio registered an RBI double, Marano a sac fly and rookie Dominic Masino connected on his second homer of the season, a three run shot.
Tyler Stone added insurance in the seventh with a solo homerun.
The Lions were able to score one in the bottom of the ninth, but Kean was able to hold on for the sweep.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
Jason Gilman (4-3) earned the win after tossing seven innings, allowing no earned runs and three hits. He fanned five and walked two.
Nick Nemes worked the final two innings and allowed just one run and three hits.
Offensively Kyle Adorno was 3-for-5 with a double.
