Union, N.J. (4/5/25) – The Kean University baseball team improved to 6-0 in NJAC play with a sweep of Rutgers-Camden on Saturday.
Game One – Kean 15, Rutgers-Camden 0
HOW IT HAPPENED:
#14 Kean pushed across the first run of the day in the second on an RBI single from Nick Sellari.
The Cougars added three more in the fifth with three consecutive hits. Kyle Adorno recorded an RBI single, Tyler Stone added an RBI triple and CJ Tomalavage registered an RBI double.
Kean (22-5) doubled the score in the sixth with four runs. RBI doubles from Brett Hilsheimer and Tomalavage as well as an RBI single from Sellari made it 8-0.
The flood gates opened in the seventh as the Cougars added seven more on seven hits. Highlighting the action was a two RBI triple from Adorno and two RBI double from John Chiusano.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
The Scarlet Raptors (17-8, 3-3 NJAC) were held to just three hits, all singles, with two off the bat of Frankie Romond.
Starter Jason Gilman improved to 8-0 with a seven inning outing. He allowed just three hits with no walks and eight strikeouts.
Chris Urbanik and Cole McGourty tossed the eighth and ninth and faced the minimum, combining to strikeout five of the six.
Offensively Stone was 4-for-5 with two RBI and two runs scored while Adorno recorded three hits and four RBI with three runs scored. Tomalavage had three hits and three RBI while Sellari had two hits, two runs scored and three RBI.
In total 21 players appeared in the opener for Kean.
Game Two – Kean 3, Rutgers-Camden 2
HOW IT HAPPENED:
The nightcap was a pitchers' duel. Kean scratched across the first run in the fourth as Adorno reached on an error and proceeded to swipe second and third. A groundout from Tomalavage was enough for the game's first run.
Kean made it 2-0 in the sixth as it was Justin Teixeira's turn to reach on a single and he stole around the bases before coming home on a single from Stone.
The Scarlet Raptors tied things up in the seventh with two outs. A miscue prolonged the inning and Romond took advantage with a bloop single to center, scoring two.
The Cougars loaded the bases in the bottom of the ninth on singles from Stone and Tomalavage and an intentional walk to Dan Reistle. Chiusano came through with a single up the middle for the game-winner and walk-off win.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
The game featured no extra base hits by either team and just one player, Stone, who recorded multiple hits.
Jason Basilicata (4-0) earned the win in relief. He allowed two singles and two unearned runs with three strikeouts.
Both starters did not factor into the decision, but kept the scoring to a minimum. Christian Pareja tossed six scoreless innings for Kean allowing two hits and two walks, striking out five. Daniel Robeson threw eight innings for Rutgers-Camden, allowing two runs, one earned, with five hits and no walks. He fanned nine.
