Morrison Powers Kean Past Rutgers-Camden in NJAC Clash

UNION, N.J. - The Kean University women's volleyball team remained undefeated in New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) play on Wednesday night, sweeping Rutgers-Camden, 3-0 (25-20, 25-21, 25-18), at Harwood Arena.

The Cougars (6-6, 2-0 NJAC) finished the night with 49 kills and hit .404 as a team, while also collecting 44 assists, eight service aces and four total blocks. Cayley Elena Morrison led the way offensively with 16 kills on 20 attacks without committing an error, hitting an impressive .800 for the match. Abigail Carpenter added nine kills, while Ashley Torok finished with 10 kills and hit .667. Rae Marrero directed the offense with 31 assists and added four kills of her own.

The Scarlet Raptors grabbed an early 8-1 advantage after a brief tie in the beginning of the set. The Cougars slowly chipped away at the deficit and eventually pulled even at 13-13 following a service ace from Torok. After Rutgers-Camden regained a 15-14 lead, Kean responded with a 3-0 run to regain the lead. Rutgers-Camden responded with a 4-0 run before the Cougars exploded for seven straight points to catapult themselves into the lead. The Cougars maintained control from there and closed out the set, 25-20, on a kill from Morrison.

The second set was much tighter from the outset. Rutgers-Camden jumped out to a 3-0 lead, but Kean answered and eventually tied the set at 8-8. The teams continued to trade points before the Scarlet Raptors took a 16-14 lead. The Cougars responded with consecutive points to even the set at 16-16 and later took a 21-19 lead following a Torok service ace. Kean never looked back, getting kills from Marrero and Morrison before Morrison capped the set with another kill to give the Cougars a 25-21 victory and a 2-0 match lead.

Kean came out firing in the third set and quickly took control. After Rutgers-Camden tied the score at 1-1, the Cougars ripped off a 12-1 run to build a 13-2 advantage. Rutgers-Camden cut the deficit to 17-12, but Kean responded with two straight points to regain a comfortable cushion. The Cougars continued to hold off the Scarlet Raptors down the stretch, with Morrison, Carpenter and Torok each contributing kills before Marrero sealed the sweep with a service ace for the 25-18 win.
