Women's Volleyball Cruises Past Rutgers-Newark on Senior Night

UNION, N.J. - The Kean University women's volleyball team earned a four-set (25-20, 27-25, 23-25, 25-12) victory over Rutgers-Newark on Thursday night at Harwood Arena in New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) play. Before the match, the Cougars honored their five seniors, Jenilsa Pichardo, Annabelle Valencia, Danielle Suter, Skylee Ohler, and Cayley Elena Morrison.

Kean (11-10, 5-1) hit .240 as a team with 57 kills. Cayley Elena Morrison and Ashley Torok led the charge with 12 kills each, while Danielle Suter paced the team with 24 assists. Defensively, Annabelle Valencia tallied a team-high 22 digs.

Rutgers-Newark (9-12, 0-6) was limited to .090 hitting for the match. Shania Oigbokie recorded 10 kills for the Scarlet Raiders while hitting a .308. Nicole Sullivan dished out 23 assists while Jaedyn Simba-Malasarte secured 20 digs.

The Cougars set the tone early, taking the opening set 25-20 behind a balanced offensive effort. Kean recorded 15 kills in the set. Kean took an 8-5 lead behind a Torok kill before the Scarlet Raiders stormed back to cut the lead down to one, 10-9. Down the stretch, the Cougars used an 8-1 run, highlighted by a pair of aces from Rae Marrero to put Kean ahead for good.

Kean carried that momentum into the second set, but Rutgers-Newark pushed the Cougars into a tighter battle. The Cougars jumped out to a 4-0 lead, but the Scarlet Raiders quickly responded with a 4-0 run of their own to tie the set at four. Trailing by one, Torok ignited a 6-0 run by the Cougars to propel them in front, 15-10. Morrison later gave the Cougars set point before the Scarlet Raiders flipped the script and took the lead. The Cougars, however, refused to go down and used a 3-0 run capped by Abigail Carpenter to take a 2-0 lead in the match.

Rutgers-Newark responded in the third set, edging Kean 25-23 to keep the match alive. The visitors generated 12 kills in the frame and capitalized on opportunities down the stretch to cut the deficit to 2-1.

Kean answered emphatically in the fourth set. The Cougars took control early and pulled away for a 25-12 victory, limiting Rutgers-Newark to six kills in the set while producing 14 of their own.
