Union, N.J. (3/19/26) – The Kean University women's flag football team competed in their first varsity home contest with a thrilling 37-0 win over Long Island University.
The Cougars (4-1) pushed forward with a 24-point second quarter to take a lead they would not relinquish. Jazriel Miranda connected with Tzuriya Thompson for a four-yard strike for the game's first touchdown.
Erika Mercedes found Sela Lefler later in the quarter for a 20-yard touchdown to put the Cougars ahead, 12-0.
Lefler didn't waste much time, intercepting the ball early in the ensuing LIU drive to give back possession to the Cougars. She was the target for Miranda on the first play of Kean's drive for a quick five-yard touchdown reception (18-0).
The Sharks next drive ended in a similar fashion as Lefler recorded her second interception of the evening. This time she rushed on the first play of the drive for an 11-yard touchdown (24-0).
Mercedes put the score at 30-0 in the third quarter with a three-yard dash.
Mercedes showed her wheels with a 78-yard interception return late in the fourth quarter to give Kean their final touchdown of the evening. Raven Heckel converted on the one-point extra point attempt for what would be the final.
Nia Rivera had five stops on defense while Thompson added four with two sacks.
Kean competes in the NCFFL Maryland Regional next weekend.
