Women's Flag Football Tops Montana in Garden Clash

Union, N.J. (4/18/26) – The Kean University women's flag football team defeated the University of Montana in the Garden State Garden City Classic on Saturday.  The Cougars fell to St. Joseph's in conference action in the nightcap.

Kean 34, Montana 13

Kean got on the board with a bang as Sela Lefler found space for a 66-yard touchdown reception from Jazriel Miranda in the second quarter.  The two connected again for the extra point.

The Cougars started with good field position late in the second quarter and drove 31 yards on seven plays to go ahead 14-0.  Miranda found Tzuriya Thompson for a six-yard reception and executed the extra point pass.

The University of Montana answered on their next possession, capping the drive with a 38-yard touchdown reception.

Miranda found Lefler again in the third quarter, this time for a 13-yard strike to put Kean ahead, 20-7. Lefler took the first play of Montana's next possession and returned the pick-six 15 yards, giving Kean a 27-7 lead after the one-point conversion.

Lefler added her last touchdown of the day in the fourth quarter, taking the second play of the drive 35 yards off Miranda's throw.

Miranda was 17-of-30 for 242 yards.  Lefler had 12 receptions for 193 yards and three touchdowns on offense.  She added three stops and an interception return on defense.

St. Joseph's 26, Kean 6

After falling behind, 13-0 after the first half, the defense helped set up great field position for what would be Kean's only points of the nightcap.  Thompson started things off with an interception at the St. Joe's 12-yard line.  After two plays, Miranda scurried across the goal line, cutting the deficit in half.

That would be a close as Kean would get however, as St. Joseph's scored two more touchdowns in the final quarter.

Kean travels to Staten Island next Sunday for three ECAC contests to close out the regular season.
