Tyler Scott came to Kean University to pursue his passion for teaching while continuing his lacrosse career. Four years later, the Monroe Township native graduated as Kean University's 2026 valedictorian.Â
Scott, a four-year member of Kean's men's lacrosse team, graduated summa cum laude from the College of Education with a Bachelor of Science in physical education and health.Â
He delivered the Valedictory Address before thousands of classmates, faculty and guests at Kean's Commencement on May 20.Â
"Years from now, we may not remember every assignment, exam or challenge," Scott said. "We will remember the people who helped us through it."
Scott said Kean stood out during his college search because it offered the opportunity to compete in Division III lacrosse, study in one of New Jersey's top education programs and remain close to home.Â
At Kean, Scott embraced opportunities that extended beyond the classroom. He participated in a multi-semester research project examining dress code policies in New Jersey high school physical education classes following the COVID-19 pandemic. He also completed an adapted physical education internship with Kean's Cougar Climb program, mentoring students with diverse learning needs.
"It was a shock and an honor to be named the valedictorian," Scott said. "I'm proud of myself because it wasn't easy, and it's the highest honor I've ever received in my life."
Sancha Gray, Ed.D., acting dean of Kean's College of Education, said Scott represents the dedication and perseverance that define Kean students.Â
"Tyler exemplifies the transformative power of Kean University's College of Education," Gray said. "Through rigorous academic preparation, research opportunities and leadership experiences, he grew as a scholar, athlete and emerging professional. His journey reflects our commitment to preparing educators and leaders who will create meaningful impact in their communities and beyond, and we are excited to see all he will accomplish throughout his career."
Scott credited Kean faculty with shaping his collegiate experience and helping put him on track to achieve his career goals.
"There were always approachable people on campus who were there to help me," Scott said. "If I needed guidance, I always had professors, advisors and administrators I could lean on."
This semester, Scott completed a full-time student teaching assignment at Elmora School No. 12 in Elizabeth while playing his final season of lacrosse with the Cougars.Â
"Balancing school and athletics was definitely a challenge," Scott said. "I learned the importance of balance and making time for the things you love."
Kean men's lacrosse head coach Alex Lopes described Scott as a quiet leader whose work ethic and consistency set an example for his teammates.
"He's the type of guy every coach is blessed to have on their team because he does everything right," Lopes said. "Tyler proved you can excel at a high level academically and athletically. He prioritized academics while still competing at a high level on the field."
After graduation, Scott will begin his career as an elementary physical education and health teacher within the Hamilton Township school district and serve as an assistant lacrosse coach at Monroe Township High School.
"I've met incredible people here and made friendships that will last forever," Scott said. "Kean gave me the opportunity to grow as a student, athlete and person, and I'm extremely grateful for everything these last four years have given me."Â
