Union, N.J. (9/22/26) – The Kean University women's volleyball team powered through a long five set match to come away with the win against Montclair State University in the NJAC opener for both.
The Red Hawks fall to 8-4 overall.
Kean 3, Montclair 2 (19-25, 25-19, 25-23, 21-25, 15-8)
MSU used two separate 4-0 runs in the first set to give themselves enough cushion to take a 1-0 lead.
Kean rallied for a 9-2 run late in the second stanza to even the match up at two-all.
The teams seesawed down the stretch in set three before Kean broke a 23-23 deadlock with a kill and then block from Cayley Elena Morrison.
The Cougars led early in the fourth set, but MSU rallied and tied things up on several occasions. Their last surge happening at the 19-all mark as Breanna Craig registered a block and two kills.
Kean used a strong start in the final set, jumping out to a quick 8-3 lead. That was enough to earn their first NJAC win of the year.
Morrison led Kean with 20 kills and three blocks while Abigail Carpenter and Ashley Torok each contributed with 15 kills. Rae Marrero recorded 56 assists along with 10 digs. The Cougars combined for 12 aces and 63 kills.
Bryn Bautista had a match high 22 kills while hitting .426.
Kean returns to action this weekend with a trip up to Massachusetts.
