NEW YORK, N.Y. - Kean Jersey City battled John Jay to a scoreless draw on Wednesday, September 23 as both teams struggled to find the back of the net despite several scoring opportunities throughout the afternoon. The draw moved KJC women's soccer to 2-2-1 on the year.
The Cougars came out attacking early, earning three corner kicks in the opening eight minutes and putting pressure on the John Jay defense. Beatriz Oliveira Dos Santos registered Kean's first shot of the game in the sixth minute before Kayla Rodrigues tested the John Jay keeper six minutes later. Kean continued to create chances as Yanielis Labrador and Sarah Alvarez each put shots on frame, but John Jay's Anina Gut turned away each attempt to keep the game scoreless heading into halftime.
While the Cougars controlled much of the early pressure, John Jay found its opportunities as the half progressed. Jessica Martin kept the Bloodhounds off the scoreboard, making three saves in the opening 45 minutes, including back-to-back stops on Ava Lopez. The two sides went into the break locked at 0-0 with Kean holding the edge in corner kicks.
John Jay came out of the break looking to break the deadlock and began putting more pressure on the Cougars' defense. Martin continued to stand tall between the pipes, turning away an early attempt from Sofia Soler before the Kean defense blocked two more shots to keep the game level. The Bloodhounds continued to attack as the half progressed, but Martin answered every challenge, making another save on Lopez in the 67th minute before denying Soler again in the 83rd minute.
The Cougars had their chance to grab the lead late when Gabriella Cardona put a shot on goal in the 77th minute, but Gut came up with the save to keep the game tied. Neither team could find the breakthrough during the final minutes as the Cougars and Bloodhounds settled for a 0-0 draw.
Martin finished the afternoon with six saves to earn the shutout, while Gut made five saves for John Jay. Kean Jersey City finished with seven shots, including five on goal, while John Jay recorded 11 shots with six on frame.
