Kean and #6 West Conn Battle to a Scoreless
Tie
Union, N.J. - (10/17/06) The Kean University Cougars battled the
6th ranked Western Connecticut State University Colonials to a 0-0
tie after 110:00 minutes of women's soccer action on Tuesday
evening in less then ideal weather conditions. The teams played the
entire match in a driving rain storm with both sides having
opportunities to win the game. Following the tie, the Cougars
record stands at 9-3-2, while the Colonials remain unbeaten and
holds a 15-0-1 record thus far.
Western Connecticut had the better of play for most of the first,
but could not find the back of the net as Kean goalie Nicole
Groszew (Denville, N.J.) made a six saves on nine Colonial shots.
In the second half Kean picked up the pace and with 27 minutes in
the match, senior Heather Anzivino (Belford, N.J.) took a pass from
the back and went in on a breakaway. However, WCSU keeper Jenna
Cappellieri (Stratford, Conn.) was up to the task as she deflected
the ball over the net to preserve the scoreless tie.
In the first overtime session WCSU almost ended the match with a
flurry of shots, but the Cougars got two team saves off the goal
line to keep the Colonials off the scoreboard.
In the match, WCSU out shot Kean 19-14 and held a 6-4 advantage in
corner kicks. Cappellieri made eight saves, while Kean's Groszew
finished with those six saves.
The Cougars return to action this Saturday when they host Rowan
University at Alumni Stadium at 7 p.m.
