Kean's Late Goals Lift Cougars Past RU-Newark,
2-0
Hillside, N.J. - (9/20/06) Kean University tallied a pair of
goals off corner kicks in the final three minutes of the match to
propel the Cougars to a 2-0 victory over Rutgers-Newark in New
Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) women's soccer action on
Wednesday afternoon. With the win, the Cougars record improved to
5-1 and 1-1 in the NJAC, while the Scarlet Raiders fall to 3-4 and
0-2 in conference play.
Kean controlled play for most of the match, but could not find the
back of the net as Rutgers-Newark goalie Katie Hastings (Haddon
Heights, N.J.) made a handful of brilliant saves. However, with
just over three minutes left in the contest, senior Brienne
Campbell (Freehold, N.J.) served a corner kick into the box where
fellow classmate Lisa Battaglia (Gibbstown, N.J.) one-timed a shot
into the net for the game-winner. Two minutes later, Campbell sent
a carbon copy serve to the opposite post where sophomore Nicole
Tahan (Clifton, N.J.) tapped in the insurance goal.
In the match, Kean out shot Rutgers-Newark 22-7 and held a 9-1
advantage in corner kicks. Hastings made nine saves, while Kean
keeper Nicole Groszen (Denville, N.J.) made three saves in her
first career shutout.
