Men's Hoops Rallies Past USMMA, 53-47
KINGS POINT, N.J. (12/12/07) - The Kean
University men's basketball team erased a double-digit second-half
deficit, as the Cougars defeated host United States Merchant Marine
Academy, 53-47, in non-conference action on Wednesday evening.
The Cougars (2-4) snapped a three-game skid, as junior
Shavon Hogges (Paterson, N.J.) was the lone player
in the game in double-figures with 12 points.
Trailing 31-16 at halftime, Kean opened the second half on a
17-7 run to pull within five points with 12:20 remaining.
Rookie Farod Robinson (Jersey City, N.J.) gave the
Cougars the lead for good with 2:01 remaining on a free throw and
Kean would convert 5-of-6 from the charity stripe to close out the
game.
The Mariners (0-7) took the halftime lead behind a strong
shooting performance, hitting half of their shots (12-of-24), while
limiting Kean to just 24.0 percent (6-of-25) shooting. In the
second half, Kean responded hitting nearly half of its shots
(11-of-23), while holding USMMA to only 23.8 percent shooting and
five field goals in the decisive second half.
For the game, Hogges hit 3-of-4 from the floor and all five of
his free throw attempts in only 14 minutes of action off the
bench. Senior guard Will Floyd (Eustis,
Fla.) followed with nine points, while freshman
Keith Williams (Jersey City, N.J.) added five
points, five rebounds and two steals.
The Cougars return to action on Saturday, December 15, when they
host Gwynedd-Mercy College in non-conference action at 1 p.m.
