Men's Hoops Fall Short Against Gwynedd-Mercy

Kean Falls Short Against Gwynedd-Mercy, 77-71

UNION, N.J. (12/15/07) - Guards Will Floyd (Eustis, Fla.) and Keith Williams (Jersey City, N.J.) combined for 51 points and six steals, however the Kean University men's basketball team fell short against visiting Gwynedd-Mercy College, 77-71, in non-conference action on Saturday afternoon.

Sophomore guard Lemeire Talley (Blackwood, N.J.) led the four players in double-figures with 19 points, three assists and three steals to lead the Griffins (7-2). 

In the opening half, Kean (2-5) led by as many as seven points before the Griffins closed the half on a 17-5 run to take build a 10-point lead (33-23) at halftime.  Talley and sophomore guard Matt Johnson (Philadelphia, Pa.) led the Griffins with 11 and 10 points, respectively, while Williams led all scorers with 12 points for Kean. 

The Cougars tied the game at 44-44 in the second half on a three-pointer by Williams with 12:19 remaining, however the Griffins regained the lead for good on a layup by junior forward Haven Wroten (Phiadelphia, Pa.) before extending the lead back out to 10 points (69-59) with 2:29 remaining. 

Kean would cut the deficit back to five points (72-67) with 14 seconds remaining and down to four points with just three seconds left before Talley converted a pair of free throws in the final seconds for the game's final score. 

Johnson finished with 17 points and six rebounds, while senior forward Tom Keenan (Phiadelphia, Pa.) added 16 points and a game-high eight rebounds.  Junior forward Dave Smith (Cape May Court House, N.J.) chipped in with 15 points and seven rebounds, as he converted 6-of-7 shots from the floor.

Williams hit 10-of-14 from the field, including 4-of-7 from long range, while Floyd added four three-pointers and 9-of-10 from the charity stripe.  Rookie forwards Akinwande Oshodi (Florence, N.J.) and Jonathan Jones (Linden, N.J.) combined for 13 points, seven rebounds and three blocks.

The Cougars return to action on Wednesday, December 19, when they host Wilkes University at 7 p.m.
