Women's Hoops Place Five in
Double-Figures Against Alvernia
ST. THOMAS, Virgin Islands (12/29/07) - Sophomore guard
Cardiss Jackman (Tobyhanna, Pa.) led five players
in double-figures with a game-high 20 points and junior guard
Melissa Beyruti (Union City, N.J.) became the 14th
player in program history to score 1,000 career points as
the the No. 12/14 Kean University women's basketball team
defeated Alvernia College 94-75 at the Sunsational Hoops
Classic in St. Thomas on Saturday evening.
Beyruti (pictured right) finished with 16 points, giving her
1,011 points in her 68-game career.
Jackman hit 8-of-13 shots from the floor, including 4-of-5 from
long range to lead the Cougars (8-1) to the championship game
against Cabrini College.
Kean opened the game on a 27-5 run and took a 53-32 lead at
halftime as Jackman (pictured left) led the Cougars with 13
first-half points on 5-of-7 shooting. Beyruti added 10
points, while senior center Chari' Cooper (Paulsboro,
N.J.) had nine rebounds and eight points in the opening
half.
The Crusaders (3-4) cut the deficit to four points at 76-72 with
4:05 remaining in the contest before Kean closed the game on a 18-3
run en-route to the 19-point victory.
Cooper finished with her seventh double-double of the season,
finishing with 19 rebounds and 13 points, while Beyruti added 16
points. Junior guard Ebony Jackson (Newark,
N.J.) finished with a double-double of 12 points and 12
assists, and sophomore Alysha Taylor (Galloway,
N.J.) added 11 points on the strength of three
three-pointers in 10 minutes off the bench.
