Extra Innings Give Chapman Final Surge, Defeat Kean 4-3

Orange, Cali. (3/15/07) - Tyler Dean (North Plains, Ore.) singled across the winning run with two outs in the bottom of the 10th inning, as Chapman University defeated Kean University for the second time this season, 4-3, Thursday afternoon at Hart Park.

With the loss, the Cougars, currently ranked #20, fall to 6-2 overall and will now head back to the east coast to conclude their 2007 schedule.  The Panthers, ranked #3, improve to 17-2 overall.

Chapman jumped on the board early with a solo shot in the bottom of the first by Ryan Cavan (Belmont, Cali.).

Kean then took the lead in the top of the sixth as junior Derek Gianakas (Edison, N.J.)  launched a two run shot of his own, plating Dan Mattonelli (Hamilton, N.J.) who reached on a leadoff double.

The Panthers answered back with the tying and go-ahead runs in the bottom of the same inning.  Pitcher and designated hitter Kurt Yacko (Costa Mesa, Cali.) recorded an RBI single while Patrick Ohail (Yorba Linda, Cali.) pushed across a run with a groundout.

The Cougars forced extra innings by tying the game in the top of the eighth.  Junior Ryan Clark (Livingston, N.J.) sent pitch hitter Chris Carrano (Lincoln Park, N.J.) home with an RBI fielder's choice.

Joe Augustine (Highland Park, N.J.) suffered the loss.  Augustine (1-1) tossed nine and a third innings allowing all four runs and eight hits.  He also fanned eight and walked just one.

Gianakas finished 2-for-4 with two RBI and a homerun.  Junior Maikel De La Rosa (Newark, N.J.) was 3-for-5 with a double.

Kean has concluded its California trip and will return to a snowy east coast where schedule changes are imminent.
