Buono Sets School Point Record in 13-12 Win Over Manhattanville

UNION, N.J. (4/21/07) - Senior attack Gio Buono (Plainsboro, N.J.) scored four goals and added one assist, to lead the Kean University women's lacrosse team past the Manhattanville College Valiants, 13-12 in a pivotal Skyline Conference match-up on Saturday afternoon. With the win, Kean improved to 6-7 overall and 2-3 in conference play, while Manhattanville fell to 5-7 and 2-3 in the Skyline.

Buono netted two goals early as the Cougars took a 6-0 lead just under seven minutes in the game. With her second goal, Buono already the school leader in career goals, became the program's all-time leader in career points, passing Lily Luu who amassed 173 points from 1998-2000.  Buono now has 157 career goals and 17 assists for 176 points during her three-year career.

Manhattanville was valiant as they battled back from that early deficit scoring five straight goals to close within 6-5 with 9:14 left in the first half. Kean then responded by closing out the half with four straight goals, including three in the final 67 seconds to take what appeared to be a commanding 10-5 lead after 30 minutes of play.

Kean's Ashley Reynolds (Old Bridge, N.J.) scored the first goal of the second half to increase the Cougars lead to 11-5 with 26 minutes to go in the match. Manhattanville once again rallied scoring five of the next six goals to trim the deficit to 12-10. KU's Joeline Bennett (Willingboro, N.J.) ended the run with what turned out to be the game-winning goal off a free position goal with 8:44 left in the game. Manhattanville did make in interesting with a pair of goals in the final minute, but the Cougars hung on for a hard-fought conference victory.

For Kean, freshman attack Reynolds, led the Cougars with six goals, while classmate Bennett had an outstanding all around game with two goals, one assist and a game-high seven draw controls.  Senior goalie, Lydia Pinto (Clark, N.J.) made 12 saves in the win.

For Manhattanville, sophomore Abbe Grimes (Hamden, Conn.) led the team with six goals, while junior midfielder Cory Alcorn (Orangeville, Ontario) added four goals and one assists. In goal, freshman Mary Albano (Trumbull, Conn.) made 11 saves.

The Cougars return to action on Friday, April 27, when they host College of Mount Saint Vincent for the Skyline Conference finale at 7 p.m.
