Buono Sets School Point Record in 13-12 Win Over
Manhattanville
UNION, N.J. (4/21/07) - Senior attack Gio Buono
(Plainsboro, N.J.) scored four goals and added one assist,
to lead the Kean University women's lacrosse team past the
Manhattanville College Valiants, 13-12 in a pivotal Skyline
Conference match-up on Saturday afternoon. With the win, Kean
improved to 6-7 overall and 2-3 in conference play, while
Manhattanville fell to 5-7 and 2-3 in the Skyline.
Buono netted two goals early as the Cougars took a 6-0 lead just
under seven minutes in the game. With her second goal, Buono
already the school leader in career goals, became the program's
all-time leader in career points, passing Lily Luu who amassed 173
points from 1998-2000. Buono now has 157 career goals and 17
assists for 176 points during her three-year career.
Manhattanville was valiant as they battled back from that early
deficit scoring five straight goals to close within 6-5 with 9:14
left in the first half. Kean then responded by closing out the half
with four straight goals, including three in the final 67 seconds
to take what appeared to be a commanding 10-5 lead after 30 minutes
of play.
Kean's Ashley Reynolds (Old Bridge, N.J.) scored
the first goal of the second half to increase the Cougars lead to
11-5 with 26 minutes to go in the match. Manhattanville once again
rallied scoring five of the next six goals to trim the deficit to
12-10. KU's Joeline Bennett (Willingboro, N.J.)
ended the run with what turned out to be the game-winning goal off
a free position goal with 8:44 left in the game. Manhattanville did
make in interesting with a pair of goals in the final minute, but
the Cougars hung on for a hard-fought conference victory.
For Kean, freshman attack Reynolds, led the Cougars with six
goals, while classmate Bennett had an outstanding all around game
with two goals, one assist and a game-high seven draw controls.
Senior goalie, Lydia Pinto (Clark,
N.J.) made 12 saves in the win.
For Manhattanville, sophomore Abbe Grimes (Hamden,
Conn.) led the team with six goals, while junior
midfielder Cory Alcorn (Orangeville, Ontario)
added four goals and one assists. In goal, freshman Mary Albano
(Trumbull, Conn.) made 11 saves.
The Cougars return to action on Friday, April 27, when they host
College of Mount Saint Vincent for the Skyline Conference finale at
7 p.m.
