Kean, Muhlenberg Win Women's Soccer Openers with
Shutout Victories
UNION, N.J. (9/1/07) - Senior forward Michelle
Fischer (Scotch Plains, N.J.) notched a pair of goals to
lead the Kean University women's soccer team to a season-opening
2-0 victory over visiting St. Joseph's College (L.I.) on Saturday
afternoon in the opening round of the Cougar Classic.
In the first game of the afternoon, Muhlenberg College freshman
midfielder Valerie Patriarca (Hedding, N.J.)
scored a pair of goals in the Mules' 4-0 win over Gwynedd-Mercy
College.

Forward Michelle Fischer had strong start to
her senior season, scoring both goals in Kean's 2-0 victory over
St. Joseph's.
In the opening half, Fischer gave the Cougars the 1-0 lead, as
she took a pass from rookie Samantha Yock (South Brunswick,
N.J.) and found the back of the net 27:07 into the
game.
Fischer added the insurance goal with just under 18 minutes
remaining in the contest, when she gathered sophomore midfielder
Kelly Rigano's (Scotch Plains, N.J.) corner kick
off the crossbar with 17:22 left in the game.
Kean held a slight 12-10 edge in shots and had a 5-0 advantage
in corner kicks, as sophomore goalkeeper Nicole Groszew
(Denville, N.J.) made four saves in the 76 minutes of
action.
For the Golden Eagles, sophomore keeper Dana Carney
(Patchogue, N.Y.) made two saves, while senior midfielder
Jessica Ragazzi (Patchogue, N.Y.) had two shots on
goal.

Rookie Valerie Patriarca scored a pair of goals
in her first collegiate game to lift Muhlenberg College to a 4-0
victory over Gwynedd-Mercy College at the Kean Cougar Classic on
Saturday afternoon in the season opener for both squads.
Gwynedd-Mercy freshman goalkeeper Kristie Pollock
(Kennett Square, Pa.) made seven saves for the Griffins,
as Muhlenberg held a 19-3 advantage in shots for the game.
In the 27th minute of the game, Patriarca gave the
Mules the 1-0, scoring off the pass from sophomore forward
Kasey Hacker (Greenville, Del.). A little
over six minutes later, Muhlenberg extended the lead to 2-0 on a
goal from freshman midfielder Kassandra Kist (Greene,
R.I.).
The Mules added a pair of goals in the early minutes of the
second half, as sophomore back Ashley O'Grady
(Mechanicsburg, Pa.) had an unassisted goal and Patriarca
added her second of the afternoon off the assist from freshman
midfielder Diana Ortiz (Port Jefferson Station,
N.Y.).
In Sunday action at the Cougar Classic, Kean hosts Muhlenberg at
11 a.m., while Gwynedd-Mercy faces St. Joseph's (L.I.) at 1
p.m.
