Cougars Battle To 3-3 Tie With Muhlenberg
Union, N.J. (9/2/07) - Freshman Samantha Yock
(South Brunswick, N.J.) notched the tying goal with just
four seconds remaining in regulation as the Kean University women's
soccer team battled to a 3-3 tie with Muhlenberg College Sunday
afternoon at Kean Alumni Stadium in the Cougar Classic.
The first half was dominated by the Mules (1-0-1)
as they outshot the Cougars (1-0-1) 15-3 and recorded two goals in
the first 16 minutes of action. Sophomore Christina
O'Grady (Mechanicsburg, Pa.) registered the first two
goals, unassisted, in the fifth and fifteenth minutes.
Kean rallied early in the second half as they
recorded two goals of their own in the span of just over a
minute. Junior Amanda Pitts (Rahway, N.J.)
got things going on a breakaway goal at 50:30 and at 51:39 fed the
ball to senior Shannon Blackburn (Vernon, N.J.) to
tie the game at two-all.
Muhlenberg broke the tie at 72:55 as sophomore
Kasey Hacker (Greenville, Del.) scored an
unassisted goal.
The Cougars would not go away quietly as Yock tied
the game at three with just four ticks on the clock in regulation.
Both teams would battle through another 20 minutes
of action holding each other scoreless.
Freshman netminder Leandra Russo (Galloway, N.J.)
recorded eight saves in 39 minutes of action while sophomore
Nicole Groszew (Denville, N.J.) had three in the
final 71 minutes for the Cougars. For Muhlenberg, sophomore
Kate Morrissey (Huntingston, N.Y.) had two saves.
Kean will return to action on Wednesday, September
5th as they travel to Manhattanville College.
In game two of the Cougar Classic, another overtime
affair, St. Joseph's College-Long Island pulled away with the game
winner at 101:28 as junior Jessica Durant (Kings Park,
N.Y) scored off a deflection to give the Golden Eagles a
2-1 win over Gwynedd-Mercy College.
All other scoring was confined to the first half as
the Griffins (0-2) tacked on the first goal at 39:24 as junior
Mackenzie Armstrong (Quakertown, Pa.) took a pass
from senior Meg Volz (Warminster, Pa.). St.
Joe's tied things up with a goal of their own five minutes later as
sophomore Angie Merante (Holtsville, N.Y.) scored
on a breakaway.
Sophomore Dana Carney (Patchogue,
N.Y.) earned the win in goal for the Golden Eagles as she
stopped four shots while freshman Kristie Pollock (Kennett
Square, Pa.) tallied six saves in the loss for the
Griffins.
