Women's Soccer Battles To 3-3 Tie With Muhlenberg

Cougars Battle To 3-3 Tie With Muhlenberg

Union, N.J. (9/2/07) - Freshman Samantha Yock (South Brunswick, N.J.) notched the tying goal with just four seconds remaining in regulation as the Kean University women's soccer team battled to a 3-3 tie with Muhlenberg College Sunday afternoon at Kean Alumni Stadium in the Cougar Classic.

The first half was dominated by the Mules (1-0-1) as they outshot the Cougars (1-0-1) 15-3 and recorded two goals in the first 16 minutes of action.  Sophomore Christina O'Grady (Mechanicsburg, Pa.) registered the first two goals, unassisted, in the fifth and fifteenth minutes.

Kean rallied early in the second half as they recorded two goals of their own in the span of just over a minute.  Junior Amanda Pitts (Rahway, N.J.) got things going on a breakaway goal at 50:30 and at 51:39 fed the ball to senior Shannon Blackburn (Vernon, N.J.) to tie the game at two-all.

Muhlenberg broke the tie at 72:55 as sophomore Kasey Hacker (Greenville, Del.) scored an unassisted goal.

The Cougars would not go away quietly as Yock tied the game at three with just four ticks on the clock in regulation.

Both teams would battle through another 20 minutes of action holding each other scoreless.

Freshman netminder Leandra Russo (Galloway, N.J.) recorded eight saves in 39 minutes of action while sophomore Nicole Groszew (Denville, N.J.) had three in the final 71 minutes for the Cougars.  For Muhlenberg, sophomore Kate Morrissey (Huntingston, N.Y.) had two saves.

Kean will return to action on Wednesday, September 5th as they travel to Manhattanville College.

In game two of the Cougar Classic, another overtime affair, St. Joseph's College-Long Island pulled away with the game winner at 101:28 as junior Jessica Durant (Kings Park, N.Y) scored off a deflection to give the Golden Eagles a 2-1 win over Gwynedd-Mercy College.

All other scoring was confined to the first half as the Griffins (0-2) tacked on the first goal at 39:24 as junior Mackenzie Armstrong (Quakertown, Pa.) took a pass from senior Meg Volz (Warminster, Pa.).  St. Joe's tied things up with a goal of their own five minutes later as sophomore Angie Merante (Holtsville, N.Y.) scored on a breakaway.

Sophomore Dana Carney (Patchogue, N.Y.) earned the win in goal for the Golden Eagles as she stopped four shots while freshman Kristie Pollock (Kennett Square, Pa.) tallied six saves in the loss for the Griffins.
