NEWARK, N.J. (09/19/07) - Freshman
Samantha Yock (South Brunswick, N.J.) netted a
goal and had an assist to lead the Kean University women's soccer
team to a 3-2 victory over host Rutgers-Newark in New Jersey
Athletic Conference action on Wednesday evening.
The Cougars (5-2-1, 1-1-0 NJAC) snapped a two-game losing
streak, as they held an 18-5 edge in shots over Rutgers-Newark
(3-4-1, 0-1-1).
Yock's goal gave the Cougars a 3-1 lead with just 2:27 left in
the game and proved to be the game-winner as Scarlet Raider
Alison Phillips (Buena, N.J.) headed in a through
pass from sophomore midfielder Tanya Groszew (Denville,
N.J.) just 59 seconds later to fuel a frantic final minute
and a half of play.
Kean scored two goals late in the first half to build a 2-0 edge at
halftime. Sophomore Jenna Godwin (Kingwood,
N.J.) picked up a loose ball and found the back of the net
in the 41st minute. Less than three minutes later,
senior forward Michelle Fischer (Scotch Plains,
N.J.) scored on a breakaway off the assist from Yock with
100 seconds left in the opening half.
In the second half, Rutgers-Newark cut the deficit to one goal
in the 71st minute when junior midfielder Megan
Elliot (Point Pleasant, N.J.) headed in a loose ball off a
corner kick from Groszew.
Kean freshman goalkeeper Leandra Russo (Galloway,
N.J.) earned her first career victory, stopping three
shots, while Raider senior goalkeeper Katie Hastings
(Haddon Heights, N.J.) made six saves.
