Maritime Edges Kean, 11-9
Union, N.J. (4/5/08) - Maritime College used a
five goal third period to regain the lead for good and held on to
defeat host Kean University, 11-9, Saturday afternoon in Skyline
Conference lacrosse action at Kean Alumni Stadium.
The win improves the Privateers to 7-2 overall and 1-0 in the
Skyline while the loss drops the Cougars to 7-4 and 0-1 in
conference action.
Maritime was led by three individuals who recorded three goals a
piece in Stephen Doherty (Yorktown, N.Y.), Donald Toby
(Oceanside, N.Y.) and Alex Rosero (Bellport,
N.Y.). Kean was led by sophomore Scott Leathem
(Fair Lawn, N.J.) who also tallied three goals on the
afternoon.
Both teams battled and scored early, with the Cougars taking a
slight advantage (7-5) into halftime. After Maritime recorded
three of the four first goals of the match, Kean surged and
registered six uncontested goals between the first and second
periods. In the final three minutes before the break, the
Privateers notched two unassisted goals to close within two at the
half.
Maritime then dominated the third period, outscoring the
Cougars, 5-1, to regain the lead. Toby led the way with two
goals in the rally. In a defensive fourth period, Rosero
added an insurance goal with just over five minutes remaining off
an assist from freshman Alex Korb (Islip, N.Y.).
In goal, Privateer Colin Gallagher (Syracuse, N.Y.)
recorded 10 saves in the win while senior Dave Nichols
(Florham Park, N.J.) (pictured right) tallied 17 saves in
the loss.
Kean will return to action on Wednesday, April 9th
against rival Montclair State University here at Kean beginning at
7 p.m.
