MSU Pulls Away From Men's Lacrosse, 14-5

UNION, N.J. (4/9/08) - Junior midfielder John Schiavone (Montclair, N.J.) tallied two goals and two assists to lead the Montclair State University men's lacrosse team to a 14-5 victory over host Kean University in Skyline Conference action on Wednesday evening.

For the Cougars (7-5, 0-2 overall), junior midfielder Chris DeCarlo (Sandy, Utah) led the team with two goals.  The Red Hawks (7-3, 1-0 Skyline) received a game-high three goals apiece from sophomore midfielder Taylor Bonner (Old Bridge, N.J.) and junior attack A.J. Bachman (Montville, N.J.).

Bonner opened the scoring less than two minutes into the game, scoring off of the assist from Schiavone just 1:57 into the game.  Kean tied the game up 2:11 later when sophomore Mike Terry (Maplewood, N.J.) (pictured left) netted the unassisted goal with 10:57 remaining in the quarter.

The Red Hawks took the lead for good when Bachman scored the first of three Red Hawk goals to close out the first quarter with the 4-1 advantage.

After the Red Hawks extended the lead to 5-1 on a goal by Bonner to open the second quarter, Kean recorded the final two goals of the period, as juniors Eric Gillar (Milltown, N.J.) and DeCarlo scored to pull the Cougars to within 5-3 at halftime.

The start of the third quarter mirrored the end of the first, as Schiavone scored the first of three MSU goals just 43 seconds into the quarter to built an 8-3 lead midway through the period.  DeCarlo pulled Kean back to within four goals, netting the unassisted goal with less than two minutes remaining.

In the fourth quarter, Montclair State netted six of the seven goals to pull away for the nine-goal victory in its conference opener.

In goal, Kean senior Dave Nichols (Florham Park, N.J.) and Red Hawk junior Thomas Bowers (Hamburg, N.J.) each stopped 13 shots, as MSU held a 47-35 edge in shots and 37-27 advantage in ground balls.

Kean returns to action on Saturday, April 12, when they travel to Richard Stockton College for a Skyline Conference match at 1 p.m.
