Triano Lifts Kean Past Vassar, 5-2

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. (9/10/08) - Freshman Olivia Triano (Keyport, N.J.) recorded a hat trick to lead the Kean University field hockey team to a 5-2 victory over host Vassar College in non-conference action on Wednesday afternoon.

The Cougars scored three times in a two-minute span early in the opening half, as Triano (pictured right) opened the scoring 8:25 into the contest, tallying the unassisted goal after collecting the ball following a saved shot.

Senior Katie McGee (Cherry Hill, N.J.) followed just 46 seconds later, scoring off a pass from sophomore Erica Kelly (West Deptford, N.J.) on the penalty corner.  Triano added her second goal at 10:14, taking a pass from sophomore Kelly Mataya (West Paterson, N.J.) for the 3-0 lead.

Vassar got on the board in the 14th minute to trim the deficit to 3-1 before the Cougars added two more first-half goals by junior Brittany Gibbs (West Deptford, N.J.) and Triano for the 5-1 edge at the break.

Kean held a 24-7 advantage in shots and a 13-9 edge in penalty corners.  In goal, Kean sophomore Ashlie Berghold (Boyertown, Pa.) made three saves in the opening half.

The Cougars return to action on Saturday, September 13, when they host SUNY New Paltz in non-conference at 1 p.m.
