McGee Scores Game-Winner in OT

UNION, N.J. (9/19/08) - Senior Katie McGee (Cherry Hill, N.J.) scored the game-winning goal midway through overtime to lift the Kean University field hockey team to a 2-1 victory over visiting Manhattanville College in non-conference action on Friday evening.

McGee delivered a pass to junior Brittany Gibbs (West Deptford, N.J.) at the top of the circle on a penalty corner, where Gibbs controlled the ball and passed it back to McGee on the left side of the cage for the game-winner 6:46 into the extra session.

The Cougars (5-2) held a 24-8 edge in shots, as Manhattanville freshman goalkeeper Natalie Fecteau (Augusta, Maine) made 14 saves for the Valiants (1-4) in the losing effort.

Kean took an early 1-0 lead in the first half, as junior Julie Bachovchin (Piscataway, N.J.) (pictured right) scored off the assist from freshman Olivia Triano (Keyport, N.J.) following a penalty corner just 12:20 into the game.

The score held up until the final ten minutes of the contest, when Valiant sophomore Jen Ascencio (Monroe, N.Y.) gathered the loose ball following a saved shot and scored from in front right in front of the cage to tie the game with 9:21 remaining.

In the extra session, the Valiants had an early scoring opportunity with the first penalty corner of overtime, before the Cougars took advantage of their third penalty corner to score the game-winner.

For the Cougars, sophomore Ashlie Berghold (Boyertown, Pa.) made four saves in the victory.

Kean returns to action on Tuesday, September 23, when they host Richard Stockton College in the New Jersey Athletic Conference opener at 7:30 p.m.
