Late Goal Sends NJCU Past Kean,
2-1

Bernal (Totowa, N.J.) netted the game-winning goal with
just over two minutes left in regulation to send New Jersey City
University past host Kean University, 2-1, Wednesday evening in New
Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) action.
NJCU, who outshot the Cougars, 33-12, improves to 6-2-1 overall and
2-0 in NJAC play while the loss drops KU to 4-5-1 and 0-2 in the
NJAC.
After a tight, scoreless first half, KU got on the board in the
49th minute as senior Mark Wallis (New Gretna,
N.J.) took a feed from senior Tom Azydzik (Clark,
N.J.) (pictured right) near the goal for the 1-0
advantage. The Gothic Knights responded at 69:02 as senior
Cristhian Acuna (East Newark, N.J.) headed the
ball from Miguel Fontan (Lyndhurst, N.J.) to knot
the match at one. With overtime looming, NJCU scored the
go-ahead goal at 87:42 as Bernal took a pass from senior
Jonathan Bilbao (Carteret, N.J.).
Kean keeper Alfredo Oquendo (North Plainfield,
N.J.) recorded a career-high 14 saves on 17 shots on goal
in the loss while sophomore Andre Viola (Clifton,
N.J.) tallied one save in the win for the Gothic Knights.
Kean will return to NJAC action on Saturday, September
27th when they travel to Rutgers-Camden for a 7 p.m.
matchup while NJCU will host Rutgers-Newark at 1 p.m.
