Montclair State Edges Kean,
2-1
Union, N.J. (10/20/09) - Montclair State's
Annalisa Valerio scored what would be the game-winner in
the first half of action as the Red Hawks picked up their first
conference win of the season, defeating host Kean University, 2-1,
Tuesday evening.
The loss drops the Cougars to 10-3 overall and 2-2 in the New
Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) while the win improves MSU to 9-5
and 1-2 in conference action.
The Red Hawks scored first as senior Justine DiPaolo (Lanoka
Harbor, N.J.) cleared her own lane and notched the game's
first goal at 19:06 in the first half. Just four minutes
later, Valerio (Norristown, Pa.) took a pass from senior
Rebecca Dobiesz (Old Bridge, N.J.) in front of the cage to
put MSU up 2-0.
Kean fought back and pulled within one as sophomore
Olivia Triano (Keyport, N.J.) scored off a pass
from junior Kelly Mataya (Woodland Park, N.J.) at
34:11.
That would be all the scoring, though, as both teams failed to
convert in the second half.
The Red Hawks controlled the first half attempting 17 shots
(17-1) and 11 penalty corners (11-2) while the Cougars took the
second half edge with five shots (5-1) and six corners (6-1).
Junior Lauren Dobbs (Palmyra, N.J.) made six
saves for KU while freshman Megan Bosland (Boonton, N.J.)
had two saves on the night.
Kean returns to NJAC action on Tuesday, October 27th
when they travel to The College of New Jersey.
