Rutgers-Newark Edges Kean In
Extras, 7-6
Union, N.J. (3/27/09) - Junior Joe
Furnaguera (Springfield, N.J.) delivered an RBI double in the
top of the tenth inning to send Rutgers-Newark past #5/9 Kean
University, 7-6, Friday afternoon at Jim Hynes Stadium.
With the game knotted at six all, junior Anthony Yeswita
(Hasbrouck Heights, N.J.) led off the 10th with a
single to right field. After a pinching change, Furnaguera
then lined a shot into the left-center gap, to score Yeswita with
what would be the game-winning run.
Kean (15-5, 1-1 NJAC) rallied with two runs in the bottom of the
eighth and two in the bottom of the ninth to force extras.
Down 6-2 entering the eighth, junior Mike Moceri
(Yardville, N.J.) led off the inning with his second
triple of the afternoon. He would later score on a
Gabe Ramirez (North Bergen, N.J.)
single. Freshman Dylan Laguna (Edison,
N.J.) would bring the score to 6-4 after crossing the
plate on an RBI single by pinch-hitter D.J. Breckenridge
(Fair Haven, N.J.).
In the ninth, freshman Vinny Galya (Old Bridge,
N.J.) led off the inning with a single. With one
out, Moceri (pictured right) lofted a single to right field, moving
Galya to third. Laguna then doubled to right to bring home
two, and tie the score at six all.
The Cougars had the tying run at third with two outs in the
bottom of the tenth, but winning pitcher Michael Hansen
(Secaucus, N.J.) forced Galya to line out to the third
baseman.
Earlier in the day, Rutgers-Newark (10-5, 1-0 NJAC) rallied from
an early 2-0 deficit with four runs in their half of the
third. With runners on the corners and one out, sophomore
Patrick Reitemeyer (Kearny, N.J.) singled up the middle
for an RBI. Yeswita followed that with an RBI single of his
own, to tie the score at two all. Now with runners at second
and third, sophomore Matt Connors (Hasbrouck Heights,
N.J.) fouled out to the catcher deep and to the third base
side of the plate. With home plate left vacant, Reitemeyer
took advantage and scored, while Yeswita scored from second after
an errant throw back towards the plate.
Hansen (1-0) earned the win after tossing two innings of
relief. He allowed one run and two hits while striking out
three and walking one. Senior reliever Kyle Murphy
(East Hanover, N.J.) suffered the loss for the
Cougars. Murphy (0-1) allowed two run in three and a third
innings of work. He walked two, fanned three and allowed
three hits.
Offensively, Moceri was 4-for-5 with two triples and three runs
scored while Laguna was 2-for-4 with three RBI and a double.
Galya (pictured left) finished with afternoon with three hits and
junior Dave Zavistoski (Edison, N.J.) had two.
For the Scarlet Raiders, Furnaguera was 3-for-5 while catcher
Gerard Russomanno (Woodland Park, N.J.) was 2-for-3.
Kean looks to get back on the winning track on Saturday, March
28th when they travel to Rowan University for a
double-header. Rutgers-Newark will travel to The College of
New Jersey for a double-header at the same time.
