Baseball Sweeps Rowan, 6-3 (12) and 10-6

Glassboro, N.J. (3/28/09) - Junior Mike Moceri (Yardville, N.J.) was a combined 5-for-11 with five RBI, including a two-run homerun in extras in game one as #5/9 Kean University swept Rowan University, 6-3 (10) and 10-6 (7) Saturday afternoon at Profs Field.

With today's wins Kean improves to 17-5 overall and 3-1 in the NJAC while Rowan drops to 11-5-1 and 1-2 in conference action.

Game One

The Cougars once again played into extra innings for the second straight afternoon.  This time the outcome was different as KU plated three runs in the top of the 12th to give Kean the win.  Tied at three all, junior Dave Zavistoski (Edison, N.J.) recorded what would be the winning run as he crossed the plate on an error after reaching on a leadoff single.  Moceri added a little cushion with a two-run line drive over the leftfield wall for the three run advantage.

Senior reliever Drew Campbell (Hillsborough, N.J.) then shutdown the Profs in order in the bottom of the 12th to secure his second win of the season.  Campbell (2-0) tossed three innings allowing just one hit and no runs.

Offensively Moceri (pictured right) was 4-for-6 with three RBI and two runs scored including two doubles and a homerun.  Moceri also had a key double play in the bottom of the 11th when he caught a liner and doubled off the runner at second to end the threat and force the game into the 12th.

Game Two

Kean carried their momentum from game one into game two and scored early, plating eight runs in the first four innings of action.

Catcher Mike Manganiello (Berkeley Heights, N.J.) recorded a three-run shot, his first of the season, down the leftfield line in the top of the third in part of the action.

After Rowan made things interesting, closing in by two (8-6) after a three run shot of their own in the bottom of the fifth, freshman D.J. Breckenridge (Fair Haven, N.J.) collected the first homerun of his collegiate career, a two run blast, to give KU some breathing room with the score at 10-6.

The game was called after seven innings of action due to darkness.

Reliever Pedro Rivera (Elizabeth, N.J.) picked up the win after tossing two and a third innings of relief.  Rivera (2-0) allowed one hit while fanning four and walking one.

Offensively Breckenridge (pictured left) was 2-for-4 with three runs scored while sophomore Mike Mattonelli (Hamilton, N.J.) was 3-for-4 with two runs scored.

The Cougars head back into NJAC play on Thursday, April 2nd when they travel to take on William Paterson at 3:30 p.m.
