Cougars Cruise Past NJCU, 8-4

(North Bergen, N.J.) led all players with three RBI as
#5/12 Kean University defeated visiting New Jersey City University,
8-4, Sunday afternoon at Jim Hynes Stadium.
The game was originally scheduled for Friday, April
3rd, but was rained out.
Kean (20-6, 6-2 NJAC) got going early, with five runs in the
bottom of the first. Ramirez (pictured right) started things
off with a one out, two RBI single through the left side.
Freshman Lee Cavico (North Brunswick, N.J.)
followed with an RBI ground-rule double, and freshman Ryan
Gibbons (Glen Rock, N.J.) continued on with a two RBI
single though the right side.
New Jersey City (11-15-1, 2-5 NJAC) got right back in it with
three runs in the top of the third. After back-to-back walks
and a single to load the bases, Michael Fiorentino (Point
Pleasant Beach, N.J.) singled deep in the hole at shortstop to
bring across the first run and advanced to second after a throwing
miscue by the Cougars, which also brought home Jorge Pardo
(West New York, N.J.) from second. Later in the frame,
Mark Hoyer (Irvine, Calif.) had an RBI fielder's choice to
bring the score to 5-3.
The Cougars widened the gap with a three run fourth inning.
With two outs, junior Mike Moceri (Yardville,
N.J.) reached on an infield bunt single. He then
moved to second on a wild pitch, and Laguna doubled him home for an
RBI. Ramirez followed suit, and doubled home Laguna and later
scored on a throwing error by the Gothic Knights.
NJCU tacked on a single run in the top of the ninth as Jose
Colon (Brooklyn, N.Y.) hit a solo shot to left.
Senior Colin Feneis (Spotswood, N.J.) earned
the win. Feneis (2-1) (pictured left) allowed four this and
three runs, two earned, in six innings of work. He also
fanned five and walked three on the afternoon. Freshman
Nelson Maldonado (Newark, N.J.) suffered the loss after
tossing five and two thirds innings. Maldonado (1-3) allowed
11 hits and eight runs, six earned.
Laguna finished with a 3-for-4 performance and two runs scored
while Cavico was 2-for-4 with a run scored and RBI.
