Cougars Cruise Past NJCU, 8-4

Union, N.J. (4/5/09) - Sophomore Gabe Ramirez (North Bergen, N.J.) led all players with three RBI as #5/12 Kean University defeated visiting New Jersey City University, 8-4, Sunday afternoon at Jim Hynes Stadium.

The game was originally scheduled for Friday, April 3rd, but was rained out.

Kean (20-6, 6-2 NJAC) got going early, with five runs in the bottom of the first.  Ramirez (pictured right) started things off with a one out, two RBI single through the left side.  Freshman Lee Cavico (North Brunswick, N.J.) followed with an RBI ground-rule double, and freshman Ryan Gibbons (Glen Rock, N.J.) continued on with a two RBI single though the right side.

New Jersey City (11-15-1, 2-5 NJAC) got right back in it with three runs in the top of the third.  After back-to-back walks and a single to load the bases, Michael Fiorentino (Point Pleasant Beach, N.J.) singled deep in the hole at shortstop to bring across the first run and advanced to second after a throwing miscue by the Cougars, which also brought home Jorge Pardo (West New York, N.J.) from second.  Later in the frame, Mark Hoyer (Irvine, Calif.) had an RBI fielder's choice to bring the score to 5-3.

The Cougars widened the gap with a three run fourth inning.  With two outs, junior Mike Moceri (Yardville, N.J.) reached on an infield bunt single.  He then moved to second on a wild pitch, and Laguna doubled him home for an RBI.  Ramirez followed suit, and doubled home Laguna and later scored on a throwing error by the Gothic Knights.

NJCU tacked on a single run in the top of the ninth as Jose Colon (Brooklyn, N.Y.) hit a solo shot to left.

Senior Colin Feneis (Spotswood, N.J.) earned the win.  Feneis (2-1) (pictured left) allowed four this and three runs, two earned, in six innings of work.  He also fanned five and walked three on the afternoon.  Freshman Nelson Maldonado (Newark, N.J.) suffered the loss after tossing five and two thirds innings.  Maldonado (1-3) allowed 11 hits and eight runs, six earned.

Laguna finished with a 3-for-4 performance and two runs scored while Cavico was 2-for-4 with a run scored and RBI.
