Field Hockey Shuts Down Oswego
State, 3-0
Oswego, N.Y. (9/26/09) - Sophomore
Olivia Triano (Keyport, N.J.) scored the
game-winner just 17 seconds into the action as the Kean University
field hockey team defeated host Oswego State, 3-0, on a windy
Saturday afternoon.
Kean improved to 7-1 overall while Oswego State dropped to 2-5.
The Cougars took the lead 17 seconds into the contest when Triano
brought the ball down the field after the first play of the game
was initiated. She slapped the ball past Laker goalkeeper Jamie
Scharfe (Webster, N.Y.) to put KU ahead, 1-0.
Oswego State withstood the initial wave of pressure from the
Cougars as Kimm Hiffa (Holland Patent, N.Y.) and
Keiley Cirillo (Gloversville, N.Y.) made defensive saves
before the game's momentum turned in favor of the Lakers. Keeper
Lauren Dobbs (Palmyra, N.J.) came up with several
big stops in the first half, including a diving save on a penalty
stroke at the 15:40 mark, to keep the score 1-0 at halftime. Oswego
State held a 10-4 shots advantage over the Cougars at the
intermission.
The Cougars started the second half as they did in the first
half by maintaining control of the ball in their offensive zone.
Amie Hoch (Egg Harbor Twp., N.J.) (pictured right)
gave the Cougars breathing room when she took a shot that found the
back of the net as Scharfe was screened on the play in the 46th
minute. After a penalty corner minutes later, Kean took a three
goal lead as Brittany Gibbs (West Deptford, N.J.)
dribbled through the defense in front of the net for the score. The
Cougars took 11 penalty corners during the frame compared to just
one for the Lakers.
Dobbs stopped all eight shots she faced as she recorded her
third shutout of the season.
Kean travels to SUNY New Paltz on Tuesday, September
29th for their next matchup.
