#14 Rowan Holds Off Kean Field Hockey, 3-2

UNION, N.J. (10/9/10) – Rowan University sophomore Marisa Schoepflin scored twice, including the go-ahead goal early in the second half to lead the Profs to a 3-2 lead over Kean University in New Jersey Athletic Conference field hockey action on Saturday afternoon.

The 14th ranked Profs (9-4, 3-0 NJAC) took a 2-0 lead less than six minutes into the game, before the Cougars (7-3, 1-1 NJAC) tied the game up with a pair of goals in the opening three minutes of the second half.

Junior Olivia Triano had a goal and an assist for the Cougars.

Tied 2-2, Schoepflin took a pass from junior back Lauren Conner across the front of the cage and tipped in the game-winner at 41:18.

Schoepflin gave the Profs the early 1-0 lead when she scored the unassisted goal from the right side following a scramble in front of the cage five minutes into the game.

Less than a minute later, senior Nicole Valianti gave the Profs a 2-0 lead when she tipped in the initial hit from junior Julie Cairone.

After the half, Kean rookie Makia Sturgis tipped in the pass from Triano just 16 seconds into the second half to cut the lead in half.  Triano would tie the game up just 2:28 later when she blasted a shot into the back of the cage from the right side.

Rowan, who defeated #1 Salisbury University (1-0) earlier this week, held a commanding 22-6 edge in shots and a 14-3 advantage in penalty corners.

Kean rookie Jessica Zebley (pictured right) played the final 63 minutes of the game, stopping 12 shots.

The Cougars return to action on Tuesday, October 12, when they travel to Susquehanna University for a non-conference game at 7 p.m.
