Baseball Drops Season Opener
Union, N.J. (3/4/10) - Junior Mike Newland
(Frenchtown, N.J.) scored what would be the winning run for
DeSales University in the top of the third as the Bulldogs held on
to defeat #3/6 Kean University, 2-1, in the season opener for both.
Newland had the only multi-hit game of the day as he finished
2-for-3 with a run scored.
DeSales (1-0) got single runs in the top of the second and third
innings. In the top of the second with one out, junior
Carson Slohanker (East Greenville, Pa.) doubled into the
right-center gap. After advancing to third on a wild pitch,
freshman Bill Marriott (Boothwyn, Pa.) singled him home
for the game's first run. The Bulldogs would add on another
in the third as Newland reached on a leadoff single. After
stealing second, he crossed the plate on a Doc Neiman (Center
Valley, Pa.) single.
Kean (0-1) scored their only run of the day in the bottom of the
sixth as sophomore Dylan Laguna (Edison, N.J.) hit
a two-out single. Junior Ken Gregory (Pittstown,
N.J.) then drove him in with an RBI double down the
rightfield line.
Sophomore Julian Diaz (North Bergen, N.J.)
suffered the loss in a good outing. He struck out 10 in eight
innings of work, allowing just seven hits, six singles.
Freshman David Drinks (Mechanicsburg, Pa.) earned the
win in relief. Drinks threw two innings with just two
hits. Senior Joe Walsh (Green Brook, N.J.) earned a
save with a scoreless ninth.
Kean continues their seven game homestand as they face Franklin
& Marshall College on Friday at 2:30 p.m.
