Late Rally Sends Kean Past
Brockport, 7-6
Union, N.J. (3/7/10) - Sophomore Lee
Cavico (North Brunswick, N.J.) drove home the winning run
in the bottom of the ninth as Kean University rallied past The
College at Brockport, 7-6, Sunday afternoon from a mild Jim Hynes
Stadium.
With the game tied 6-6 entering the top of the ninth the Golden
Eagles (1-2) set up a first and third situation with one out.
Freshman Mike Weakley (Liverpool, N.Y.) then lofted what
looked like a sacrifice fly to rightfield, but junior Nick
Nolan (Linden, N.J.) (pictured right) fired a rocket to
homeplate and caught pinch-runner Jake Coleman (Hilton, N.Y.) at
the plate by several steps to hold the game at six all and send the
Cougars to the plate in the bottom of the ninth.
With one out, senior Mike Moceri (Yardville,
N.J.) drilled a double just off the top of the wall in
left-center. After an intentional pass to sophomore
Dylan Laguna (Edison, N.J.), Cavico struck with
the winning RBI with a single down the leftfield line.
Trailing 6-4 heading into their half of the seventh, the Cougars
(3-1) tied things up on a two out, two RBI single from Nolan.
Earlier in the game, Kean recorded four runs in their first
at-bat. Laguna (pictured left) got things started with a two
RBI triple followed by an RBI single from Nolan and later an RBI
single from catcher Eddie Jennings (Jackson,
N.J.).
Reliever Joseph Tarallo (South Amboy, N.J.)
earned the win in relief. Tarallo tossed two thirds of an
inning allowing just one hit.
Offensively Nolan was 2-for-4 with three RBI while Moceri was
3-for-4 with two runs scored. Laguna finished the afternoon
with a 1-for-3 performance with two RBI and two runs scored.
Kean continues their homestand and will face Stevens Institute
of Technology in a rescheduled game on Monday at 2:30 p.m.
