Shotwell, Smyth Blank LVC in Softball Sweep

ANNVILLE, Pa. (4/15/10) – Right-handers Courtney Smyth and Cassie Shotwell each tossed complete game shutouts to lead the Kean University softball team to a doubleheader sweep of host Lebanon Valley College in non-conference action on Thursday afternoon.

Shotwell was also a perfect 6-of-6 at the plate in the doubleheader for the Cougars (16-10), as the Kean handed Lebanon Valley (16-6) two of its six losses this season.

GAME ONE: Lizzi, Smyth Power Kean in Opener, 3-0

Senior right-fielder Allison Lizzi hit a two-run homerun and junior right-hander Courtney Smyth went the distance on the mound to lead the Cougars to the 3-0 win in the opener.

In the top of the first inning, freshman left-fielder Katie Schuh led off with a walk and Lizzi (pictured right) followed three batters later with a two-out homerun to centerfield to give the Cougars a 2-0 lead.

The Cougars added the insurance run in sixth inning when first baseman Cassie Shotwell had a one-out double and would score on a pinch-hit single by junior Katie Yard.

On the mound, Smyth scattered eight hits and two walks, while striking out four in the complete game shutout victory.

Shotwell was 3-of-3 at the plate, while senior second baseman Melissa Dietrich went 2-of-2.

GAME TWO:  Shotwell Tosses Three-Hitter; Perfect 3-of-3 at the Plate

Senior Cassie Shotwell had the same number of hits as she allowed to the Flying Dutchmen, finishing a perfect 3-of-3 for the second straight game and limiting LVC to just three hits in the 2-0 victory.

After a scoreless five innings of action, Shotwell (pictured left) drove in the first run of the game with a RBI single to score junior centerfielder Lindsay Kennedy, who had an infield single earlier in the inning. First baseman Katie Yard followed with a run-scoring single to give the Cougars the 2-0 lead.

Shotwell did the rest on the mound, retiring the final six LVC batters to complete the sweep, while recording two of her five strikeouts in the final inning.

Kennedy, Yard and designated player Allison Thibault each had one hit for the Cougars.

The Cougars return to action on Saturday, April 17, when Kean travels to Rowan University for a New Jersey Athletic Conference doubleheader.
