Cougar Rally Sends Kean Past Drew, 6-4

Union, N.J. (4/28/10) – The Kean University baseball team used a four run eighth inning to erase a 4-2 deficit as they defeated Drew University, 6-4, Wednesday afternoon in non-conference action at Jim Hynes Stadium.

Junior Ken Gregory led the Cougars with three RBI as Kean improved to 25-9 this season.  The loss drops Drew to 8-31 as they were led by catcher Tom Sharp, the only player on either team with multiple hits this afternoon, he was 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI.

The Rangers scored a single run in the first as Michael Bodden had a one-out double.  Drew would score single runs again in the fourth and fifth with an RBI single by Patrick Rock and after scoring on a wild pitch.

Kean closed to within 3-2 with single runs of their own in the fifth and sixth.  Gregory recorded an RBI with a groundout and rookie Steve Nappe launched his third homerun of the year.  The Rangers made it 4-2 as Sharp delivered a two-out double in the eighth.

The Cougars then rallied in their second straight game with four runs in the bottom of the eighth.  Junior Nick Nolan led things off with a single and came around to score on an RBI double by Dylan Laguna.  After an intentional walk to Nappe, catcher Eddie Jennings moved the runners over with a sacrifice.  Pinch-hitter Ryan Gibbons was then hit-by-a-pitch to load the bases.  The Cougars would tie the game up on a wild pitch.  Later in the frame, Gregory provided the go-ahead runs on a two RBI single up the middle.

Reliever Billy Dumchus earned the win.  Dumchus (2-1) allowed just one hit in one and a third innings of work.  Will Van Houten suffered the loss for Drew.  Van Houten (2-5) allowed all six runs in seven and two thirds innings.

Kean returns to NJAC action on Thursday when they host Rowan University at 3:30 p.m.
