Baseball Tops MSU; Advances to NJAC
Championship Game
Glassboro, N.J. (5/8/10) – The Kean
University baseball team punched out 12 runs en route to defeating
Montclair State University, 12-3, early Saturday morning in the New
Jersey Athletic Conference Tournament. With the win Kean
advances to the NJAC Championship at noon on Sunday.
Rookie Kevin Herget (pictured right) improved to
6-0 as he tossed seven strong innings allowing three runs and seven
hits. He also fanned nine and walked two.
The first two and a half innings were a see-saw affair as each
team traded runs for a three-all tie. But Kean broke the game
open with five runs in the bottom of the third to take
control. Junior Nick Nolan got things
started with an RBI single and junior Chris
Carrano followed with an RBI groundout. Catcher
Eddie Jennings, who had a solo shot earlier in the
game, recorded an RBI bunt single and sophomore Ryan Gibbons closed
out the scoring with his first collegiate homerun, a two run shot.
The Cougars (31-10) continued to use the longball as Ken
Gregory launched a two-run homerun in the fourth while
Dylan Laguna had a leadoff homer in the sixth.
Laguna was 4-for-4 with three runs scored and two RBI while
Jennings was 3-for-3 with two RBI and two runs scored. For
the Red Hawks (21-17), Scott Evangelist was 2-for-4 with
three RBI and a homerun.
Kean awaits their opponent for the championship game, to be
determined later this evening.
