Baseball Claims 2010 NJAC
Championship
Glassboro, N.J. (5/9/10) – The Kean
University baseball team claimed the 2010 NJAC Championship by
defeating #4 The College of New Jersey, 14-1, Sunday
afternoon. With the win Kean receives the conference's
automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.
This is the fifth straight season Kean will advance into the
NCAA Tournament, advancing all the way to the World Series the past
three seasons, with a national title in 2007.
This is the third NJAC tournament crown for the Cougars, winning
previously in 2002 and 2008.
For only the second time in NJAC history, both the softball and
baseball titles were won by the same institution, as the Kean
softball team defeated Richard Stockton, 3-0, to win their first
ever NJAC crown.
The Cougars (32-10) scored single runs in the second, third and
fourth innings before breaking the game open with five runs in the
fifth. Junior Ken Gregory got things going
with an RBI single. After back-to-back hit batsmen, sophomore
Lee Cavico ripped a two RBI single down the
leftfield line. Later in the inning freshman Steve
Giambrone hit a two out, two RBI single up the middle to
give Kean an 8-0 lead.
Offensively Giambrone was 3-for-5 with two RBI and one run scored
while Gregory was 3-for-4 with two RBI and two doubles.
For TCNJ (23-19) Jason Zegarski was 3-for-5 with a
double.
Sophomore Julian Diaz earned the win.
Diaz (5-1) (pictured right) allowed no runs in six innings of work
with six hits, three walks and eight strikeouts. Senior
Steve Montalbano earned the three inning
save. He allowed one unearned run and two hits.
Kean plays two non-conference games this week and will learn
where they fall in the bracket when the NCAA announces the field
early Monday morning, May 17th. The NCAA regional
tournament begins on Wednesday, May 19th.
