HILLSIDE, N.J. (9/1/10) – The Kean
University men's soccer team opened the 2010 campaign with a
5-2 win over visiting John Jay College at the East Campus Soccer
Field on Wednesday afternoon.
Sophomore Abner Denis had a goal and two
assists, as the Cougars (1-0) scored four straight goals spanning
the first and second-halves to pull away in the season-opening
victory.
For John Jay (0-1), rookie Edward Gonzalez and senior
Steven Castillo each netted a goal.
The Cougars opened scoring less than a minute into the game, as
Denis (pictured right) sent a cross in front of the goal to the
right side off of a free kick that sophomore Stephen Moll knocked in for the first goal just 59 seconds into
the season.
After John Jay tied the game in the 18th minute on a
goal by Gonzalez, the Cougars took the lead for good less than
three minutes later when junior Joe Brisindi
knocked in the rebound off of the direct kick from sophomore
Kharee Winslow.
In the second half, Kean quickly scored two goals in the first
10 minutes of the half to extend the lead to 4-1. Sophomore
Tiago Goetzke opened the second half scoring off
the assist from sophomore Anthony Crouchelli,
before senior Kyle Venerable had a diving header
off the cross from Denis in the 53rd minute.
Denis closed out the Cougar scoring 10 minutes later with the
unassisted goal through the John Jay defense, before the
Bloodhounds scored one final time on the goal from Castillo with
less than 20 minutes left in the game.
In goal, Kean senior Alfredo Oquendo had one
save, while Bloodhound keeper Kemar Brown finished with
two saves.
The Cougars travel to Keene State College on Saturday, September
4, when they face the host Owls the first day of the 2010 Xara
Soccer Classic.
