KISSIMMEE, Fla. (3/13/11) – Freshman
right fielder Sandra Binkiewicz finished 6-of-8
with two RBI and two runs scored, however the Kean University
softball team dropped a pair of games to Springfield College (13-2)
and University of Wisconsin-Platteville (9-6) on Sunday
morning.
GAME ONE: Cougars Fall to Springfield,
13-2
Springfield scored runs in each of the first four innings,
including a six-run third inning, en-route to the 13-2 win over the
Cougars in five innings.
The Pride (1-0) opened up the game with four runs on four hits and
one Cougar error in the first inning. After second
baseman Kasey Kelly led off with a double, shortstop
Kelly Blake followed two batters later with a groundout to
plate Kelly for the game's first run. Catcher Liz
Milly had a RBI single to drive in left fielder Ally
Rivelli, who reached on an error on the sacrifice bunt
attempt, and Milly would score one batter later when Amanda
Novak blasted a homerun over the left field fence for the 4-0
lead.
Kean cut the lead in half in the bottom half of the inning, as
rookie right fielder Sandra Binkiewicz led off
with an infield single, and advanced to second and third on a
sacrifice bunt by senior Lindsay Kennedy and a
single by Alicia Banz, respectively. After
Banz stole second base, senior first baseman Katie
Yard (pictured left) drove in both runs with a two-run
single up the middle.
In the top of the second inning, the Pride added a pair of runs
before breaking the game open with a six-run third inning capped by
a two-run homerun by Milly.
Binkiewicz and Banz each 2-of-3 with a run scored, while Yard
added two hits and two RBI.
For the Pride, Milly was 3-of-4 with four RBI and two runs
scored.
GAME TWO: Platteville Plates Three Runs in Sixth for
9-6 Win
Platteville broke a 6-6 tie with three runs in the bottom of the
sixth inning to defeat the Cougars, 9-6, in the second game for
both teams on Sunday afternoon.
Sandra Binkiewicz (pictured right) finished 4-of-5 with a
pair of RBI to lead the Cougars, who had 14 hits in the
game.
With two outs in the bottom of the sixth, right fielder
Ellyn Goerdt had a two-run double to plate the go-ahead
runs and would score on a RBI single for the insurance
run.
Errors were costly for the Cougars in the bottom of the first
inning, as three Kean errors resulted in pair of runs for
Platteville. The Cougars bats responded in the top of
the second inning, plating three runs to take a 3-2 lead.
Senior catcher Nicole Scarillo led off with a
double and would score on a single by third baseman
Courtney Melchionna to open the Kean
scoring. Binkiewicz added a RBI single to score freshman
Kelly Moorehead, who reached on an error, and
pinch runner Samantha Bonaduce would scored on a
RBI fielder's choice by sophomore Katie
Schuh.
Platteville regained the lead in the bottom half of the inning
when second baseman Brittany Caley had a bases-loaded
double to right field to drive in three runs for the 5-3
lead.
The Cougars (0-4) tied the game at 5-5 with single runs in the
third and fourth innings, and after Platteville regained the lead
at 6-5, Kean would again tie the game on a RBI single by
Binkiewicz.
Melchionna finished 3-of-4 with two RBI and one run scored,
while Scarillo and Moorehead each had multi-hit games with two hits
apiece. In the pitcher's circle Kean, sophomore
Kimberly Prevedel recorded seven strikeouts, as
she went the distance.
Kean battles Endicott College and Nazareth College in action on
Monday, March 14th.
