Softball Splits at Rebel Spring Games, Defeat Nazareth, 4-1

KISSIMMEE, Fla. (3/14/11) – Senior Nicole Scarillo blasted three homeruns in a pair of games and the Kean University softball team picked up its first win of the season with a 4-1 victory over Nazareth College on Monday afternoon.  Earlier in the day, the Cougars dropped a 6-4 game to Endicott College.

GAME ONE: Two Homeruns From Scarillo Not Enough as Endicott Rallies Past Kean, 6-4

Designated player Nicole Scarillo (pictured left) hit a pair of solo homeruns, however Endicott College scored five runs in the top of the seventh inning to rally past Kean, 6-4, on Monday morning.

Scarillo scored the first run of the game with a solo homerun over the centerfield fence in the bottom of the fourth inning.

Endicott answered with a run in the top of the fifth inning to tie the game, however the Cougars scored single runs in the bottom of the fifth and sixth to take a 3-1 lead on Scarillo's second homerun of the game.

In the top of the seventh inning, Endicott got the first three runners on board and would later take advantage of a pair of bases loaded walks to take the lead, 4-3, before adding two more runs following a Cougar error for the 6-3 lead.

Kean was able to get a pair of runners in scoring position in the seventh inning and have the tying run at the plate with one out, however the Cougars only managed a run on the sacrifice fly by Katie Schuh.

Senior Courtney Smyth took the loss, allowing eight walks and six hits in six and two-thirds inning.

Scarillo finished 3-of-3, while rookie right fielder Megan Cegielski was 2-of-2 with two runs scored.

GAME TWO: Scarillo, Prevedel Lift Cougars to Win Over Nazareth, 4-1

The Cougars (1-5) scored four runs in the final three innings to erase a 1-0 deficit and pick up their first win of the season, 4-1, over Nazareth College.

Trailing 1-0 after Nazareth scored on a RBI single by left fielder Meg DiMario, the Cougars tied the game in the top of the fifth when junior shortstop Alicia Banz laced a triple down the left field line to drive in rookie Kelly Moorehead, who had reached on an error earlier in the inning.

Catcher Nicole Scarillo gave the Cougars the lead when she hit her third homerun of the game, a two-run shot to centerfield for the 3-1 lead.

Kean tacked on the insurance run an inning later on the sacrifice squeeze bunt by Banz to plate freshman Megan Cegielski, who led off the inning with an infield single.

Sophomore pitcher Kimberly Prevedel picked up the win, as she allowed just three hits in the complete game victory.

Banz, Cegielski (pictured right) and rookie Sandra Binkiewicz each had two hits apiece for the Cougars.
