Softball Splits in Spring Break Action

KISSIMMEE, Fla. (3/16/11) – The Kean University softball team split in action at the Rebel Spring Games on Wednesday morning, defeating Endicott College, 6-5, before falling to Westminster College (Pa.), 6-5, in eight innings.

GAME ONE: Rookies Power Kean Past Endicott, 6-5

Rookies Sandra Binkiewicz and Megan Cegielski combined to go 5-of-6 with four runs scored as the Cougars defeated Endicott College, 6-5, in the opener on Wednesday morning.

Sophomore Kim Prevedel won her second straight start, as she recorded seven strikeouts and allowed just three earned runs on eight hits.

The Cougars (2-6), who scored all six of their runs in the first four innings, took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning.  Binkiewicz led off the game with a single and would score on a RBI single by senior catcher Nicole Scarillo and sophomore Katie Schuh scored on a RBI fielder's choice by senior first baseman Katie Yard.

Kean extended the lead to 3-0 in the second inning when Cegielski (pictured left) reached on a walk and would later score on a sacrifice fly by junior shortstop Alicia Banz.

The two teams each took advantage of errors to score the game's next run, Kean tacked on two more pivotal runs in the top of the fourth inning when Cegielski and Binkiewicz scored on a two-run single by Schuh for the 6-1 lead.

Endicott scored three runs in the bottom of fourth inning on a two-run double by third baseman Jocelyn Russo and a pair of Cougar errors that allowed Russo to score.

The Gulls trimmed the deficit to one on a RBI single second baseman Jesse Bilafor in the bottom of the sixth inning and Endicott had the go-ahead run on base before the Cougars recorded the final two outs of the inning for the win.

Scarillo and centerfielder Lindsay Kennedy each added a pair of hits in the victory.

GAME TWO: Rally Falls Short, Kean Falls to Westminster in Eight Innings

The Cougars scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to force extra innings, however Westminster plated the only run in the eighth inning to record the 6-5 win.

yTrailing 5-3 heading into the bottom of the seventh, the first three Cougars got on base on a pair of Titan errors and a single, pulling the Cougars to within 5-4 when pinch runner Sam Bonaduce scored from second base when sophomore Katie Schuh reached on an error on the sacrifice bunt attempt.

The Cougars tied the game two batters later on an infield RBI single by sophomore Courtney Melchionna (pictured right) to force extra innings.

In the top of the eighth inning, the Titans plated the game-winning run on a sacrifice fly by designated player Kelsey Squelch

The Titans opened the game with four runs in the top of the first inning, before the Cougars chipped away at the lead with single runs in the second, third and fifth innings.
