KISSIMMEE, Fla. (3/16/11) – The Kean
University softball team split in action at the Rebel Spring Games
on Wednesday morning, defeating Endicott College, 6-5, before
falling to Westminster College (Pa.), 6-5, in eight innings.
GAME ONE: Rookies Power Kean Past Endicott,
6-5
Rookies Sandra Binkiewicz and Megan
Cegielski combined to go 5-of-6 with four runs scored as
the Cougars defeated Endicott College, 6-5, in the opener on
Wednesday morning.
Sophomore Kim Prevedel won her second straight
start, as she recorded seven strikeouts and allowed just three
earned runs on eight hits.
The Cougars (2-6), who scored all six of their runs in the first
four innings, took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning.
Binkiewicz led off the game with a single and
would score on a RBI single by senior catcher Nicole
Scarillo and sophomore Katie Schuh scored
on a RBI fielder's choice by senior first baseman Katie
Yard.
Kean extended the lead to 3-0 in the second inning when
Cegielski (pictured left) reached on a walk and would later score
on a sacrifice fly by junior shortstop Alicia
Banz.
The two teams each took advantage of errors to score the
game's next run, Kean tacked on two more pivotal runs in the
top of the fourth inning when Cegielski and Binkiewicz scored on a
two-run single by Schuh for the 6-1 lead.
Endicott scored three runs in the bottom of fourth inning on a
two-run double by third baseman Jocelyn Russo and a pair of Cougar
errors that allowed Russo to score.
The Gulls trimmed the deficit to one on a RBI single second
baseman Jesse Bilafor in the bottom of the sixth inning and
Endicott had the go-ahead run on base before the Cougars recorded
the final two outs of the inning for the win.
Scarillo and centerfielder Lindsay Kennedy each
added a pair of hits in the victory.
GAME TWO: Rally Falls Short, Kean Falls to
Westminster in Eight Innings
The Cougars scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning
to force extra innings, however Westminster plated the only run in
the eighth inning to record the 6-5 win.
yTrailing 5-3 heading into the bottom of the seventh, the first
three Cougars got on base on a pair of Titan errors and a single,
pulling the Cougars to within 5-4 when pinch runner Sam
Bonaduce scored from second base when sophomore
Katie Schuh reached on an error on the sacrifice
bunt attempt.
The Cougars tied the game two batters later on an infield RBI
single by sophomore Courtney Melchionna (pictured
right) to force extra innings.
In the top of the eighth inning, the Titans plated the
game-winning run on a sacrifice fly by designated player Kelsey
Squelch.
The Titans opened the game with four runs in the top of the
first inning, before the Cougars chipped away at the lead with
single runs in the second, third and fifth innings.
Senior designated player Nicole Scarillo
finished 3-of-4 with one run scored and one RBI, while Melchionna
added two hits and three RBI.
Senior right-hander Courtney Smyth allowed
eight hits and just two earned runs in the losing effort.
