ORLANDO, Fla. (3/15/11) – Oswego State
scored five unanswered goals in overtime to defeat Kean University,
16-11, in women's lacrosse action at Disney's ESPN Wide
World of Sports Complex on Tuesday morning.
Senior Amanda South (pictured left) scored six
times for the Cougars (0-4), while Rachel Raffa led the
Lakers with five goals and two assists in their season opener.
The Lakers opened the game with three goals in first 64 seconds
of the game behind a pair of goals from Raffa. Kean tied the
game with three straight goals from sophomore Lyndsey
Cannon, South and sophomore Stephanie
Tocko, however Oswego State closed the half with a 3-1 run
to take a 6-4 lead at halftime.
Oswego State opened the second half with three straight goals to
take a 9-4 lead. The Cougars would score six of the
game's next seven goals, with South opening up the scoring
with back-to-back goals. Senior Joelle
Vitale tied the game at 10-10 with the unassisted goal
with 7:23 left in the game to cap the run.
The Lakers regained the lead with a goal from Kristen
Darcy, however South tied the game to force overtime with her
sixth goal of the game with 4:16 left in regulation.
Oswego State controlled the overtime session however, as Darcy
broke the tie with the first goal 1:27 into overtime.
In the victory, Laker goalkeeper Ashlee Engel made 10
saves, while senior goalkeeper Ashlie Berghold
stopped 10 shots for Kean.
