UNION, N.J. (10/9/12) – The Kean University field hockey team used four first half goals, two from Stephanie Soares, to help defeat Mercy College 5-1 Tuesday night.
Soares opened the scoring at 10:31 of the first half as she shot in a pass from Korri Thompson off a penalty corner opportunity. Just a little under four minutes later, Melissa McDermott found the back of the cage, as she scored her first goal of the season at 14:14. Junior Veronica Pogorzelski made it 3-0 at the 29:43 mark in the first half. Soares would add a second goal late in the first half, with Thompson (pictured left) registering her second assist of the night.
The Cougars (6-8) tallied a final goal early in the second half, as Laura Cheatham scored her fifth goal of the season off an assist from Marissa Robinson. With just under ten minutes left to play in, the Mavericks (1-10) finally broke through and scored off a Marissa Kluber penalty stroke, spoiling the shutout for the Cougars.
Freshman Katie DiCarlo finished with one save for the Cougars, while Kristen Znaniecki tallied five saves in 52:07 minutes of action.
The Cougars continue their home slate on Saturday, October 13th, as they take on the Ospreys of Richard Stockton College in New Jersey Athletic Conference action at 1 p.m. at Alumni Stadium.
