Jersey City, N.J. (12/8/12) – New Jersey
City University used a last minute rally and edged the Kean
University women's basketball team in overtime, 56-49,
Saturday afternoon.
With one second remaining in the contest and down by one, freshman
Kiana Briggs stole a Cougar inbounds pass and was
subsequently fouled. Briggs hit one of two free throws, tying
the contest and forcing overtime. The Gothic Knights (3-4)
then outscored the Cougars (1-6) 10-3 in the extra session.
Kean was led by rookie Jatirah Diggs (pictured
left) who had a game-high 19 points in addition to four steals and
four rebounds. Briggs finished with 13 points for NJCU.
NJCU controlled most of the game and led by as many as eight
(38-30) with 5:42 left on a running jumper by Briggs. But
Kean rallied and used a 12-4 run over the next 4:15 to gain a 44-42
lead. Ahead by three with 23.8 left, a layup by senior
Maxine Kaminski with three seconds left made it a
one-point game before Briggs claimed the inbounds steal.
Sophomore guard AnnaRose Pierre supplied 18
points, six rebounds and three steals in 33 minutes before fouling
out. Rookie center Jordan Mangiafico-Chambers
grabbed nine rebounds in 19 reserve minutes.
Kean returns to action on Wednesday when they travel to William
Paterson University.
