Men's Volleyball Defeats Mount Saint Vincent, 3-1

UNION, N.J. (2/8/12) – Seniors Christian Portera and Steve Vahalla combined for 33 kills and four total blocks to lead the Kean University men's volleyball team to a 3-1 victory (23-25, 25-16, 25-13, 25-19) over visiting College of Mount Saint Vincent on Wednesday evening.

After dropping the opening set, the Cougars (5-2, 4-0 Skyline) controlled the final three sets, as 11 different players saw action.  Senior outside hitter Chris Bacchi led the Dolphins (2-3, 1-2 Skyline) with 13 kills and eight digs.

Portera finished with 17 kills and just three errors in 24 attack attempts for a .583 hitting percentage, while Vahalla finished with 16 kills and just two errors in 28 attempts (.500 hitting percentage) in the win.

Rookie Kyle Farley added five kills and five total blocks, as the Cougars totaled nine blocks in the match.  Freshman Alex Barnhard (pictured left) dished out 33 assists in the final three sets, while libero Tom Kemmerle had eight digs.

For the Dolphins, freshman Brett Holiday had 10 kills, while senior setter Michael Sin had 33 assists.

Kean returns to action Thursday evening when the Cougars host John Jay College at 7:30 p.m.
