Union, N.J. (3/17/12) – Sophomore John Marcelli broke a 10-all tie with just over three minutes remaining as the Kean University men's lacrosse team edged visiting College of Brockport, 11-10, Saturday afternoon in non-conference action.
With the win the Cougars improve to 6-1 this season while the loss drops the Golden Eagles to 1-5.
It was a see-saw affair in the first quarter as two straight goals from sophomore Richard Cheifitz (pictured left) put Kean on top, 3-1, before Brockport netted two of their own to knot the score at three-all. The second quarter belonged to Brockport as they outscored the Cougars, 5-1, including two in the final minute of action in the first half, to take an 8-4 lead at the break.
Kean stormed out of the break with some adjustments and scored four straight goals to get right back into the match. Junior Brad Mills got the run started with just under six minutes to go in the third quarter. Marcelli and sophomore Collin Harrity scored just 10 seconds apart near the 3:30 mark and Cheifitz finished the run to tie the game at 8-8. Brockport broke the run and took a 9-8 lead to close out the third quarter.
Cheifitz and sophomore Mike Sheehan were able to tie the score and take a 10-9 lead before Jesse Elliot tied the game at 10-all with 6:26 to go. Marcelli then recorded the game-winner off a pass from Cheifitz with 3:34 to go. The Cougars were then able to control the ball for the remainder of the game to seal the win.
Sophomore Dino Vitale (pictured right) earned the win in net as he recorded four saves and allowed just two goals in his 30 minutes of action in the second half. Offensively Cheifitz finished the game with a game-high four goals as well as an assist. For the Golden Eagles, Elliot also had a game-high four goals along with an assist.
Kean travels to the west coast and will take on Union College in San Diego on Tuesday, 7 p.m. local time.
