Whittier, Calif. (3/18/12) – Whittier
College used two long balls to help propel them past the Kean
University baseball team by the final of 4-1 in 11 innings on
Sunday afternoon in the California Invitational.
Designated hitter Corey Hansen led off the
11th frame with a walk and later swiped second, putting
the go-ahead run in scoring position. Later in the inning
with two outs, infielder Josh Genzuk delivered what would
be the winning run with an RBI single to right-center. One
batter later, Austin Straus added insurance with a two-run
blast to right-center for the final of 4-1.
The Cougars (10-3) tied the game at one-all in the bottom of the
seventh as sophomore Tyler Smarslok started off
the inning with a walk. He would be sacrificed to second and
later in the inning crossed the plate on an RBI double from senior
D.J. Breckenridge, his second double of the
afternoon. Whittier (11-11) took a 1-0 lead in the top of the
fourth as Andrew Vallejo lined a one-out homerun to
left.
Starter Ryan Schwenn picked up the win. Schwenn
(5-3) tossed 10 innings allowing 11 hits and one run with four
walks and three strikeouts. Reliever Andrew Pigott
tossed a 1-2-3 inning to earn his first save. Senior
Steve Sanguiliano suffered the loss.
Sanguiliano (1-2) allowed three runs and two hits in three innings
of relief. Junior Julian Diaz saw his first
action of the spring with four shutout innings of relief.
Starter Sam Fourre earned a no-decision with four
innings of work.
Offensively Breckenridge (pictured left) was 2-for-3 with two
doubles and an RBI while Sanguiliano, sophomore Joe
O'Connor and junior Nick Ramagli
all recorded two hits apiece.
Kean returns to action on Monday with a rescheduled matchup
against Pomona-Pitzer at 3 p.m. local time.
