Union, N.J. (4/3/12) – The Kean University women's lacrosse team edged visiting Ramapo College by the final of 13-12 Tuesday afternoon in both Skyline and New Jersey Athletic Conference action.
The Cougars (6-4, 1-1 NJAC, 4-1 Skyline) were led by junior Lyndsey Cannon and sophomore Ciara Mastrodomenico who both had five goals apiece. The Roadrunners (4-5, 1-3 NJAC, 1-3 Skyline) were led by junior Adrianna Tepedino who had four goals in the loss.
It was a tale of two halves, as the Cougars raced out to a 3-0 lead in the first two and a half minutes of play. The teams alternated goals, but Kean kept at least a two goal lead at all times and used a 3-0 run late in the half to take a 9-4 halftime lead. Cannon (pictured left) tallied four goals in the first 30 minutes while Mastrodomenico added three, including the last two of the half.
It was Ramapo's turn in the second half, scoring three straight to open the period. A tally by Mastrodomenico with 21:47 to go gave Kean a 10-7 lead, but the Roadrunners came right back and scored the game's next four goals to tie the match and take the lead for the first time in the contest. Tepedino started the four goal run and capped it off with a free position goal with 11:22 remaining. The Cougars then rallied to tie the game at 11-all on an unassisted goal from Mastrodomenico and took the lead for good off a free-position goal from freshman Marisa DeAngelis putting Kean ahead, 13-11. Ramapo was not done and scored a free-position goal by senior Colleen Steel with 3:22 to go, but Kean secured the draw control on the next position and was able to hold on for the win.
Junior Jules Keeley made 10 stops for the Cougars while rookie Reagan Vier tallied 13 for the Roadrunners.
In addition to her five goals, Cannon added five groundballs, six draw controls and three caused turnovers. Tepedino registered four draw controls, and two caused turnovers on the afternoon.
Kean returns to NJAC action on Thursday when they travel to Rutgers-Camden.
