Baseball Edges Rutgers-Camden, 2-1

Camden, N.J. (4/6/12) – The #6/7 Kean University baseball team plated single runs in the sixth and eighth to edge Rutgers-Camden by the final of 2-1 Friday afternoon in New Jersey Athletic Conference action.

Kean (18-6, 3-1 NJAC) scratched across the game's first run in the sixth as sophomore Tyler Smarslok recorded a one-out single.  After moving to second on a sacrifice, he scored two batters later off an RBI double from sophomore Shane Alvarez down the right field line.  The Cougars then pushed across what would be the winning run in the eighth as sophomore Nick Zucchero started off the frame with a double down the left field line.  After moving to third on a sacrifice, senior Vinny Galya (pictured left) poked an RBI single into left to give Kean a 2-0 advantage.

The Scarlet Raptors (9-13, 0-4 NJAC) rallied in the bottom of the ninth as pinch-hitter Bruce Monro lined a one-out double into the gap.  A Cougar miscue put runners on the corners and a stolen base put two runners into scoring position.  Senior Steve Sanguiliano (pictured right) got a groundout from Albert Rivera, while Rutgers-Camden pushed across one to pull within one.  He then retired the final batter on a deflected ball back up the middle to record his third save of the season and preserve the win for the Cougars.

Senior Ryan Zamorsky earned the win for Kean.  Zamorsky (4-1) allowed six hits in eight innings while fanning six and walking four.  Southpaw Collin McGowan suffered the loss for the Scarlet Raptors.  McGowan (0-2) allowed one run and three hits in six innings of work.

Offensively Galya was 2-for-3 for the Cougars while senior Tristan Keyser was 2-for-4 for Camden.

Kean returns to action on Saturday when they travel to take on Montclair State University in an NJAC doubleheader beginning at 11:30 a.m.
